Volunteer

Come Volunteer with us!

Transporters:

These volunteers are the unsung heroes of the Center. They log miles and miles to pick up an injured bird, often in isolated locations, and relay the bird to another volunteer, or a center for treatment.

Transporters are required to:

  • Collect information from raptor finders regarding the location and condition of bird when found
  • What actions the finder took in capturing and feeding if attempted
  • Cursory injury assessment and documentation thereof
  • Handling bird if the finder does not have the bird in an adequate/appropriate box for movement
  • Be able to explain the mission of the WVRC and have some basic knowledge of raptor behavior
  • Always represent the WVRC in a professional manner

Environmental Education Program Presenters:

Education program presenters convey to the general public the mission of the Center using non-releasable birds who are permanent residents of the center as ambassadors. Educational volunteers must be good public speakers and competent in handling birds. Program Presenters are required to:

  • Accurately convey the mission of the WVRC to the public in various venues
  • Tailor their programs to the audience age, education, and venue
  • Have knowledge of center operations and ability to teach the rehabilitation cycle from intake to release
  • Have knowledge of indigenous raptors and others in our care that are not typically found in WV
  • Have and convey accurately knowledge and history of educational bird ambassadors
  • Ability to handle and control education birds in all situations
  • Ability to transport and see to the needs of birds while on the road to programs
  • Always represent the WVRC in a professional manner

Building and Grounds:

We have a large amount of acreage that we plan to develop educational hiking trails on.  We have three buildings that need to be maintained.  Building and Grounds keepers can help by:

  • Trim and prune trees and bushes
  • Plant and maintain flower beds
  • Invasive plant control
  • Create and maintain hiking trails
  • General maintainance on buildings inside and out
  • Adding and maintaining signs
  • Road and driveway maintainance
  • Always represent the WVRC in a professional manner

Office Support

We can have a huge task of keeping up with paper work, advertising, reaching out to the public for donations and so on.  Office Support may be asked to:

  • Data Managemnet
  • Answer phones or return calls
  • Freelance writing
  • Grant writing
  • Graphic design
  • Photography
  • Membership Recruitment
  • Fundraising
  • Mailings
  • Cleaning
  • Always represent the WVRC in a professional manner

There is much work to be done, and we'd love to have you on our team!

If you're interested in helping us in any way, fill out the form below and we'll get back with you as soon as we can. If you think you can help in a way not listed we are interested in everyone's talents.
